Stock counts on your w2 income

Unvested or deferred stock doesn’t. There are many people with much higher “total comps” than W-2 stats suggest.

to second point, yes, but mostly because of (1) capital gains, and (2) the ability to access liquidity w/o realizing capital gains

unvested stock is not income, it's potential future income and when it vests it counts as income on your w2
